Boulder County is located in the state of Colorado, United States. It was one of the original 17 counties created by the Territory of Colorado on November 1, 1861. The county was named for Boulder City and Boulder Creek, chosen due to the large boulders found in the area which initially hampered gold prospecting efforts. Boulder City, now simply Boulder, serves as the county seat, making it the administrative center. Over the years, Boulder County has maintained its original borders, except for a southeastern portion that became part of the City and County of Broomfield in 2001.

In recent times, the county has faced challenges such as the Marshall Fire in December 2021, the most destructive fire in Colorado's history, impacting cities like Superior and Louisville and unincorporated Boulder County areas.
